I teach and study American literature, popular culture, print history, film, and comics, narrative theory, and medical humanities—and will likely be excited by any new area of study you send me way. I was born on this campus many years ago, but left when I was very young, only returning in 1999 when I joined the faculty in the Department of English.  I have served as director of the Popular Culture Studies minor since its founding, and have been hanging around the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum so long they generously made an unofficial second home for me there, where I have worked with them on several projects, including my first solo-curated exhibit last year, Drawing Blood: Comics & Medicine. Currently I am obsessing over the history of caricature and cartoon art in the 17th and 18th century.

Serving as director of the Humanities Collaboratory makes me feel like a kid in a candy store: everything going on around me is so exciting, and now I have a professional excuse to participate in all of it. I am looking forward to working with individuals and groups from all over campus in the years ahead.
